When you can’t use other forms of contraception, it can be possible to get a contraceptive injection. Find out how it protects you, how to get it, and its pros and cons.

What is it?

The injectable contraceptive is a hormonal contraceptive method that contains only one hormone: progesterone. This hormone thickens the cervical mucus at the entrance of the uterus, which prevents sperm from entering. It also thins the lining of the uterus so that if an egg is fertilized, it cannot implant itself onto the uterus’ walls.

How do I use an injectable contraceptive?

In Quebec, a specialized nurse 👩‍⚕️ or a doctor can prescribe and administer an injectable contraceptive. You receive an injection deep into the muscle of your buttock, thigh or arm every three months.

👍 Advantages

  • It is suitable for people who cannot use a contraceptive containing estrogen.
  • Because the injection is effective for three months, you don't have to think about it daily. If you forget to get your injection after the three-month period, click here to find out what to do next.
  • The cost is covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan.

👎 Disadvantages

  • It is usually reserved for people who cannot use other forms of contraception because it has certain health risks. Don't hesitate to consult your doctor for more information.
  • You are usually infertile for 6 to 9 months after the last injection.
  • The injectable contraceptive does not protect you against sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs).
